Why use thread grease?

Thread grease is designed to lubricate, seal and prevent galling. It helps to provide protection against corrosion and metal-to-metal contact in drill rods.

At its most basic, an appropriate thread grease makes it easier to do up and undo your rods, as well as maintaining them in the best state - to maximise the life you get out of them.

A thread grease helps to protect contact surfaces from wear and fatigue, due to load and friction. Using the right product makes it easier to achieve required torque, as well as providing lower breakout torque. By achieving the appropriate torque, you reduce galling. Galling is a form of wear caused by adhesion between sliding surfaces.

Thread grease as a specialised product has been used in the oil and gas industry, with specialised products for drill string and casing for over 65 years. In core sampling, mud rotary, DTH hammer or directional drilling work, the requirements differ and so there are products to suit their different challenges. There is always an option for a thread grease that will be cost-effective, but do a better job than an anti-seize.

Drill rods are expensive, and incorrect thread grease application, or insufficient application decreases the life and risks premature failure.

How should thread grease be applied?

  • Ensure the connection is free of drilling fluid

  • Apply thread grease to all contact surfaces

  • Fill threads; root to crest

  • Too much grease can interfere with make-up

  • Too little may result in galling

  • Coat primary shoulder

  • Coat secondary shoulder or seal area

How much do you need to apply?

Environmental products

There was a time when selecting an environmentally friendly thread grease would mean accepting a lower quality option, in terms of what the product delivered.

Jet-Lube has been a global leader in designing products from the ground up, which meet high environmental standards, but also deliver the same technical requirements as traditional, less environmental options.

This includes metal free products, but also includes products that are hydrocarbon free.

Tim Babbage

There’s only one thing Tim loves more than drilling… it’s Manchester United.

Tim’s been around forever. He gets a little more excited about drilling fluids than seems reasonable, given he runs a business that imports dirt. Tim’s the go-to for vertical and directional drilling - focusing on drilling fluids and down hole tooling.

He’s highly motivated, knowledgeable and genuinely cares - about our customers, and the Blick team. You’ll either find him in our Hamilton office, at F45, or grabbing a coffee.
